Vermont considers itself a mountainous state. I’d proudly called myself a Green Mountain girl growing up. I’d proudly looked out at the mountains visible everywhere I turned …
… until I took a trip out west after my college graduation, took in my first glimpse of the Rockies, and promptly realized that my home state was home to hills with a bit of an identity complex.
The Rockies? Now those were mountains.
They were still my standard when I set off to discover the Alps. A day trip to Salzburg, nestled in the Alps.
Bring them on.
It was foggy as the bus wound its way from Linz toward Salzburg, and we were all … sullen isn’t the right word, because we were all trying to be polite. Disappointed doesn’t quite hit the right note. Imagine the space in between, and that would capture it.
Our trip leader wouldn’t have any of it, though, as he cheerfully recounted moments in Salzburg’s history as we traveled along. Mozart! The Sound of Music! Good times, fine fun for all …
“WHOA!”
Every single person on the bus said it at the same exact moment, as the fog dissipated and we realized that the Alps had unsuspectingly wrapped themselves around us. Dark blue crags beneath a brighter blue sky. Sharp points, jagged lines, absolutely breathtaking.
And once again, the bar was raised. These were mountains.
Walking across the Charles Bridge in Prague, my friend Beth and I stopped to lean over the side and noticed padlocks affixed to the iron beams supporting one of the sculpture installations. We thought it odd and I snapped a photo (like I do) before we resumed our journey.
We knew something was up in Mala Strana, after finding the Lennon Wall and a nearby canal. A fence was completely covered with locks, some bare, some with etchings or messages in marker.
According to the convention, these padlocks are symbols of love. When you’ve found your true love, you write or carve both of your names onto a padlock, affix it, and then throw the key into the water.
We’ll see how many of the padlocks outlast the romances, but I’m certainly in favor of spontaneous collaborative art installations. Well played, lovers.
I took myself on a solo photowalk early this afternoon. Sporting a Bruins t-shirt, I received: 3 high fives, 5 “Let’s go Bruins” remarks, one compliment on pairing my camera with B’s gear, one Krejci sighting, and one smile from Chara as we walked by each other and I (electing not to bother him during his free time) gave him a big grin.
Shortly after the Chara sighting, a Segway tour passed by me. One man slowed as he was going by. “Excuse me, but wasn’t that Zdeno Chara back there just a little bit?”
“Yup, sure was.”
His face lit up as he exclaimed in pleasant surprise. “I LOVE BOSTON!”
All in all? I’d say that makes for a mighty fine afternoon.

fan appreciation day! this is so cute.
She took my tour today! Not only was today her first time at Fenway, it was her birthday. She was awesome. So glad it worked out well for her!
Since Tumblr won’t let me default to this one, I guess I have to go about it manually. For all the latest, visit VixDubs.
Photographer (to me): Are you the one who was always here last season, with the gold glitter Stuart sign? Because every game, that glitter would wind up on my seat.
Laura: GOD, NO. I mean, she thinks he's great, but she's not TACKY.
Me: Definitely not. Glitter's just not my style.
It amazes me that I was holding my hat in my hands, hoping for a chance to throw it if the hockey gods wanted to reward Shawn Thornton and the fans with the most unlikely of hat tricks. Meanwhile, Marc SAVARD was busy brawling it up.
Last night made no sense, but I’m calling a Christmas miracle. Well played, Bruins.
My favorite, being outstanding. Per usual.
